I got a text a little earlier from one of Cos's sons informing me his dad had died earlier. Cos and I go way back. He was my best friend for life and I knew him for 75 years. He got me started lettering race cars. If you ever met him, guaranteed you have some stories. Such a great guy. :)

Condolences to the Cosgrove family. Cos was a cool guy. He lettered my father’s last two cars.

One of a kind and one of the best!  Great friend I met Go kart racing in the late 70’s and he lettered my first two race cars and a lot of other stuff.  Lost connection a little when he moved to Pa but we reconnected and stayed close friends since.  Gonna miss you my friend.   Rest in peace. 

Rest in peace COS. He along with Dennis Smith basically set the standard and got the ball rolling as far as racecar lettering goes in the NJ/PA area. Prior to them there were a few great lettering guys but specializing in racecars was something new. Most of us “kids” in the mid to late seventies tried our best to emulate, and ended up with our own style in the process, you can see the influence if you look. Glad I got to know him and call him a friend.

RIP Cos 

I never met Bob Cosgrove, but I admired his work that graced many hot rods at Flemington back in the day.  I had the pleasure of calling Morrisville, Pa's Tommy Backes my friend.  Tom lettered many iconic 60s and 70s hot rods, such as the Piscopo 39, the Menschner 21 and the Taylor 93, among others.  I considered Tom an artist as I do Cos.  Tom and Cos' artistry added personality to every hot they touched.  Personally, I can't say that about today's "wrapped" cars.  I'm sure Tommy and Cos are comparing their individual styles in heaven right now.  For me, their "pieces of art on 4 wheels" made up the best era of local racing.  Scott Ely

One of a kind... in regards to talent, and in personality.   It was the finishing touch that Cos put on so many race cars that gave them that look, and the "personality" that we will always remember when we think of our favorite cars.

He called those like himself who lettered race cars "Scribblers."  Whatever the name, what artist "create" when lettering a racecar is exactly that:  Artistry.  And when you think if that, you think of Cos.
