In the 70's it was common to run a treaded pony wheel/tire, not sure if it was a "dirt" tire though.

One thing that has always bothered me in racing was how drivers always give up the left front like it's not even there, especially on dirt today. Asphalt, every inch of rubber on the track helps and guys always talk about left rear, right rear and right front and don't care what the left front does. I was always concerned to keep as much grip with the left front because it is the hardest corner to work with and if that is working generally the rest is working.
