My Indy car experience doesn’t involve being at races. Only ever saw practice and time trials at Pocono. As a little kid the Indy 500 didn’t mean anything, I thought Flemington, Nazareth and Harmony was what racing was all about. However, I recall being at a family friend’s house for a Memorial Day picnic in 1969 and all the adults kept talking about Mario Andretti leading (and eventually winning) the Indy 500, which was on the radio. Another memory is 1980, myself and fellow racer Brad Vanselous went to Hightstown NJ , I bought a sportsman car from Mike Lyons, and we listened to the race on the radio on way home. Remember how cool it was hearing that former sprint driver Roger Rager was leading the race in a small block Chevy. Also, 1985 myself, Jeff and Rod Hanna watching Danny Sullivan “spin and win” in the motel room after getting rained out at Weedsport NY.
