It's a lost art. Most short tracks in my neck of the woods have terrible announcers. They do zero prep work. They think playing the local classic rock station before racing begins and during down time is what an announcer does. Once the show begins, all they do is read off names and car numbers. Nick and Pete were in the pits long before hot laps talking to drivers and getting inside dirt. When I was working at a track out west the announcer had a notebook for each class with a file for every driver and he was in the pits long before hot laps getting more info for his notebooks. He had plenty to talk about.

Often when we show up at a track our race director has to bring a list with our drivers names, car number and home town with him to the scoring tower to give to the announcer because it has never occurred to them to get off their a$$ and go talk to the drivers. All night long all you hear is names and car numbers.
I've never announced but spotting bad announcing is quite easy. Especially when you've been around excellent announcers much of your life.
