My youth was spent watching races where a driver's earnings from his 3 most recent race nights would determine his starting position, assuming he qualified for the feature. Those days are gone. Not a fan of "the dash" to determine the first 8 in the feature. Previous $$$ earned should at least determine where you start in the heat races. I think Hi Limit is using time trial results.
