Heading a couple hours south to Sumter (SC) Speedway with the Carolina Sprint Tour on Saturday. Probably 15 years ago I predicted there would be a bunch of houses on the land before too long. It was in bad shape. Bad show, bad crowds, bad car counts. They moved the pits out of the infield probably 5 years ago. They added all new lights 2 years ago and put down new dirt last year. So I want to see the "new" Sumter Speedway for myself. It used to be so poorly lit that darker cars would momentarily disappear on the backstretch. I hear the place is lit up like daytime now. Last week I told the CST promoter he didn't need to pay me but put me on the officials list for Sumter. Told him to give me a radio and a 4 wheeler. I left the series on very good terms. LOL
I'm glad the track rebounded. It was a dump but something about the place moved me. You can tell it was an important track decades ago. There's video of Cale Yarborough racing there in the 1960s on YouTube. The place didn't look all that different from what I saw there 15 years ago.
